The Bleeding Heart Tetra, with its striking red “bleeding heart” marking, is a captivating addition to any community aquarium. Its peaceful nature and vibrant appearance make it a favorite among aquarists.
Known Names:
Hemigrammus erythrostigma, Hyphessobrycon rubrostigma, Hyphessobrycon erythrostigma.
Origin:
Native to South America, particularly found in the waters of the Amazon River basin, these tetras thrive in densely vegetated, slow-moving streams.
Habitat:
Naturally found in habitats such as slow-moving creeks, pools and seasonal lakes that provide shelter in the form of waterlogged wood debris or aquatic vegetation. These are typically acidic and full of tanins that stain the water like tea. To really make them feel at home, the aquarium should be generously furnished, with plenty of bogwood and areas of dense planting to emulate this habitat as closely as possible. Unlike many tetras, they prefer the lower levels of the aquarium and will often be found in loose association a little distance apart above the substrate.
Diet:
Flake, micropellets, frozen foods such as mosquito larvae, brineshrimp and daphnia.
Tank Mates:
Known for their peaceful demeanor, Bleeding Heart Tetras make excellent community fish. They coexist harmoniously with other peaceful species such as other tetras, rasboras, dwarf cichlids, and peaceful bottom dwellers like Corydoras catfish.
Behavioural Traits:
These tetras are non-aggressive and typically shy, preferring the safety of a school. They may display minor territorial behaviors during breeding.
Experience Level:
Suitable for aquarists of various experience levels, including beginners. They are hardy and adaptable to a wide range of water conditions.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 23-28°C
- pH: 5.5-7.0
- dH: up to 12 degrees
