The shell of this viviparous snail from the Viviparidae family is reddish-brown to pink and grows to 2-3 cm. The foot is strikingly dark blue in colour and has funny golden speckles. Like all Viviparidae, this exotic operculum has separate sexes. You can recognize the sexually mature males by their thickened right antennae.
Females have a brood pouch inside their shell where the fertilized eggs develop. Every two to three weeks, the females release a single fully developed young, preferably during the night.
Known Names:
Tylomelania Gemmifera
Origin:
The Blue Berry Snail is a still unidentified operculum snail from the Viviparidae family from Indonesia.
Habitat:
Blue Berry Snails mainly live on the bottom of sediment-rich waters. They also like to bury themselves in the aquarium from time to time. Sand as a substrate or a corner with healing earth as a substrate therefore meets their needs.
Diet:
These snails are omnivores and primarily graze on algae and detritus in the tank. Supplement their diet with algae wafers, sinking pellets, and blanched vegetables such as spinach or zucchini for balanced nutrition.
Tank Mates:
You can keep a small group of five Blue Berry Snails in aquaria from 15 litres. Blueberry Snails are peaceful and can be housed with small, non-aggressive community fish, shrimp, and other snails. Avoid keeping them with aggressive or snail-eating fish, such as certain loaches or cichlids, that may see them as prey.
Behavioural Traits:
- These snails are generally peaceful and spend most of their time grazing on surfaces within the tank, contributing to a clean environment.
- They reproduce slowly in aquariums, so there is minimal risk of overpopulation.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 26-30°C - Maintain a warmer temperature to replicate their native tropical environment.
- pH: 7.5 - 8.5 to support shell health.
- Ensure the water quality is good!
